A lottery system, like the Kerala lottery, is a form of gambling during which you purchase a ticket and, if the numbers on your tickets are drawn, you get to collect a prize. In India, there are many lotteries, but they are only allowed in 13 out of 28 states. They are all run by state governments because of a ban on private lotteries. One of those lotteries, the Kerala lottery, is arguably the most popular and the most successful one.

Read ahead to learn more about the Kerala lottery. We will discuss how to participate, the prizes you can win, and how to claim your earnings.

What Are the Kerala State Lotteries?

In 1967, the Finance Minister from the Kerala Government created the Kerala lottery after a ban on private lotteries in India. The first tickets were priced at Re.1, and the big prize was valued at Rs. 50,000.

The Kerala lottery program was so successful that other states decided to do the same and start their lotteries. However, the Kerala lottery is still considered the best one. It is also heavily trusted because of its credibility, reliability, and transparent procedures.

This program was created to supplement the government’s income without increasing the taxes of Indian citizens. They also wanted to use the Kerala lottery program to provide employment to the people of India. The hope was to give agent lottery jobs to as many individuals as possible to help them better provide for their families.

Any Indian citizen over 18 years old can become an agent for the Kerala lottery. To do so, they have to fill in the required form, provide two passport size photos, and pay an initial registration fee of Rs. 200. Each year, the agent has to renew their agency for Rs. 50. The Kerala State currently employs over 35,000 agents in its distribution network. Each of them is allowed to distribute and sell Kerala lottery tickets as long as they respect the rules and conditions established by the government.

Today, the finance department is no longer responsible for managing the Kerala lottery. The Department of Taxes now organizes it and makes sure it runs smoothly every week. They employ over 465 employees who work across 14 District offices, responsible for planning the weekly and yearly draws.

What Are the Different Types of Kerala Lottery?

The Kerala State is currently holding seven weekly and six bumper lotteries.

How Can I Participate in the Draw?

The Government of Kerala controls the printing and the distribution of the tickets. They hire panel artists to create beautiful and unique tickets for the Kerala lottery. Once the design is approved, they are printed with the name of the lottery, the number, the date of the draw, and the ticket number clearly visible at the front. The back of the ticket contains information regarding prize structure and gives instructions for claiming the money if you win.

If one person wishes to participate in the Kerala lottery, they need to purchase one ticket or more from the authorized retailers or agents. The weekly tickets are sold for Rs.20/, Rs.30/-, or Rs.50/-. The bumper tickets are more expensive and can be bought for Rs.100/- and Rs.200/-.

After purchasing their Kerala lottery ticket, participants must absolutely write their name, address, and signature on the back to prove ownership of the ticket in the event that they win.

Since this is a lottery system, the only way to increase your chances of winning is to buy more tickets. If you decide to purchase many tickets at once, you might want to do so on the days with the biggest winning prizes (Sunday, Thursday, and Saturday).

The Kerala lottery takes pride in its draw procedure and believes it is one of the reasons why many like to participate. For the sake of transparency, they hold public draws in different parts of the State and welcome everyone to attend. They take place at 3:00 PM every day, and thousands of people gather for the event. Those who wish to go to the live events can ask the Kerala lottery agents or look in the media to know where they take place.

Where Can You See the Kerala Lottery Results?

There are many ways to find out the results other than attending the live draws. First, the Kerala lottery’s official website always publishes them on the same day as the draw. Anyone can head to www.kerala.gov.in or keralalotteries.in shortly after 3:00 PM on draw day to find out the results.

The results are also published in the leading dailies, like the Kerala Government Gazette, the day right after the draw. Finally, it is always possible to ask one of the Kerala lottery agents for the winning numbers.

How Can I Claim my Prize?

If you are one of the lucky winners, you need to claim your prize within the first 30 days of the draw. If the prize is valued at Rs. 1Lakh or less, the claim can be submitted directly to the District Lottery Office. However, if the gains are higher than Rs. 1Lakh, the claim needs to be made to the Director of State Lotteries.

The prize winner of the Kerala lottery needs to submit some documents to claim their prize, including:

– The claim application with a Photostat copy of the ticket. Along with this, a copy of both sides of the tickets needs to be submitted. The photocopies need to show clearly the participant’s name, address, and signature.

– Two passport-sized photos of the prize winner. They need to be attested by a Gazetted Officer or Notary.

– A form to attest the value of the prize. Note that the form is only valid if it includes the participant’s full address. (http://www.keralalotteries.com/images/documents/1rs.pdf

– If the winner is under 18, they need to provide a Guardianship certificate from the appropriate authority.

– In the event of a joint claim, one of the winners is authorized to receive the money. A “Joint declaration” will be executed simultaneously at the cost of Rs. 50/-.

– A self-attested copy of the PAN card.

– Any document that proves the individual’s identity, like a driver’s license, a passport, or an election ID card.

The last option is to claim your prize through the Nationalised, Scheduled, or State/District Co-Operative banks. The bank will receive the money only after the prize winner produces an authorization letter. The receiving and collecting banks also need to provide a certification for the money transfer to be approved.

You should know that 30% of the prize money will be deducted as income taxes if the earnings are higher than Rs. 10,000. This money is deposited directly into the central government account.

The Positive Impact of the Kerala Lottery

As mentioned above, an income tax is deducted from large prizes and sent to the government. Some of this money is used to create welfare programs to help the people living in Kerala State. One of these programs is called the Karunya scheme, and its main goal is to provide financial assistance to individuals who cannot afford to pay for their medical bills. Most of the individuals who receive financial help suffer from serious conditions like cancer, hemophilia, kidney disease, and cardiovascular diseases. Patients who need to receive palliative care are also eligible to receive this money. As of today, the Karunya fund helped pay for the medical treatments of more than 27,000 people.

Moreover, thousands of people have been able to get above the poverty line after winning a prize. Finally, the lottery helps many financially by providing employment. As mentioned earlier, it is not difficult to register to become a lottery agent, and you do not need any specific qualifications.

Final Thoughts

The people living in Kerala state seem to appreciate its lottery system. Indeed, thousands of individuals participate every week in the hope of being the next winner. Everybody seems to value the transparent process, with many attending the live draw events.

Although lotteries can be fun, they might not provide the same entertainment value as a casino. There is no game to play, and participation is limited to purchasing a ticket. You do not need to play any games, and whether you win or not is solely based on luck. Moreover, since each ticket has to be approved by the State before it can be printed, you do not have the option to select your own set of lucky numbers, as you might in other lottery games. This can be a disappointment to some who like to use the same numbers for every draw.

However, the Kerala lottery is a great option for those who enjoy lotteries. It seems to be reliable and trustworthy and, who knows, you might end up being one of the lucky winners?

Finally, even if you do not win after purchasing a ticket, you can find comfort in knowing that you helped support a good cause. Although the Kerala lottery is for-profit, it also uses some of the income taxes they collect to fund some welfare programs, like the Karunya scheme, that have helped many to this day.
